The Graduate English Language Learners (Graduate ELL) program, which is part of Rutgers University’s longstanding commitment to global engagement in higher education, supports the academic, cultural and professional development of the Rutgers University global community of graduate students and scholars. Ph.D. candidates must ordinarily have at least 72 semester-hours of approved graduate credits. Students who come to Rutgers with an MA degree in Italian from another university, a Laurea (“vecchio ordinamento”), or an Italian Ph.D. are admitted on a conditional basis. After completing 12 credits with grades of B or better, the Italian Graduate Faculty will determine, on a case by case basis, how many courses taken at other institutions will be accepted toward the Doctorate at Rutgers.
